Act 194 was signed into law in 2004, and became effective on January 29, 2005 in Pennsylvania. The law created a Mental Health Advanced Directive as a tool that focuses on wellness and recovery, and enables the individual to plan ahead and identify services and supports that they might want to receive during a crisis, if they are unable to make decisions.  The law provides for a Declaration and/or Mental Health Power of Attorney. The presentation will include the basics of the law, and a variety of perspectives on the implementation of the law, including legal counsel for a provider of psychiatric services, and mental health advocates who  advise individuals and families.
